The first of many sexual dysfunction drugs, Viagra, to be approved for sale in Canada, is expected to go on sale soon, the drug maker announced this week.

The drugs, which have been used by thousands of men across Canada for centuries, have a high potential to cause serious side effects. But the safety of the drugs has not been established in Canada.

In an email to Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, a senior Canadian government official said the drug, called Viagra, had been on sale in Canada for several months and had been found in Canada by Canadian doctors and researchers in August, the month before the first sales.

“It was not approved for sale in Canada,” said the official, “and the risk of side effects is very low.”

Viagra is the brand name for a class of sildenafil citrate drugs, which work by blocking a particular enzyme in the body, called phosphodiesterase-5. They inhibit blood flow to the penis, making it easier to achieve and maintain an erection when aroused.

Viagra belongs to the class of drugs called PDE5 inhibitors, which are used to treat erectile dysfunction in men. It works by relaxing muscles in the blood vessels that supply blood to the penis.

Viagra was approved by the FDA in 2003, and by the British drug company in 2010. The U. S. Food and Drug Administration approved Viagra in March 2014.

But the drug has caused the most serious side effects of the erectile dysfunction drugs: heart attack, stroke and chest pain.

A 2004 study showed that men who took Viagra had a 23 percent higher risk of the side effects from erectile dysfunction drugs.

Researchers noted that a man with erectile dysfunction who takes Viagra may have a higher risk of serious heart disease, diabetes and other cardiovascular problems, and may also have a higher risk of developing high blood pressure and diabetes.

“If you take Viagra, you can put your health at risk,” said Dr. David M. Kocoras, director of the U. National Institutes of Health’s Center for Health Promotion and Research, which tracks safety problems in medical research. “This has been an area where it has been very difficult to determine exactly how these drugs may actually affect the heart or blood vessels.”

In the past, Viagra has been associated with the rare but serious side effects of certain other blood pressure drugs. An FDA review of Viagra’s safety was not conducted, and the company said it would update the literature.

In 2009, a similar study showed that men who took Viagra had a 15 percent higher risk of the side effects from other blood pressure drugs.

Although the drug has been on the market in Canada, it has not yet been approved in the U. The FDA’s review of Viagra’s safety was not conducted by the company, but the FDA has decided that it will take a larger, larger study, which will include patients who take Viagra.

“This is an important drug that has been shown to cause serious side effects,” said M. Scott Shum, president of the Canadian Institutes of Health. “We are not aware of any published data showing that the use of Viagra in Canada is associated with these serious side effects.”

But a spokeswoman for Pfizer Inc., which markets Viagra, said Viagra’s side effects were very low and that the company had decided to wait for results from the study.

“Pfizer was aware of the safety concerns surrounding Viagra and has not done a definitive review of the safety of this drug,” she said.

Pfizer spokeswoman Amy Stovall said Viagra had been available in Canada for several months.

“As we know, there are risks associated with Viagra, and Pfizer is committed to ensuring the safe and appropriate use of all available options,” she said in a statement.

The drug’s maker, Pfizer, said the company is working on a new drug, called Vigorex, that is expected to be approved in the U. and Canada by late 2011.

Food and Drug Administration approved Vigorex in October 2012.
